Convergence: Digital Media and Technology  

April 5–May 27 | Schneider Museum of Art

Co-curated by Richard Herskowitz and Scott Malbaurn, this exhibition includes recent media art from the collection of the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art including Nina Katchadourian’s Acca Dacca Diptych, part of a larger project created during the artist’s travels by plane. Peter Sarkisian’s Book 2 is a commentary on the loss of writing as a form of communication in contemporary society. Ken Matsubara’s Eiffel Tower, Repetition Series is a meditation on past and present, absence and presence. Vanessa Renwick’s Medusa Smack  is an immersive installation of meditative music and images.

Virtual Reality Hands-on Gallery and Docs

1-2pm & 4-5pm VR Gallery: Experience a sampling of innovative animations created expressly for VR. Available for viewing on HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and Samsung Gear headsets and suitable for ages 12 and older.

3-4pm Docs on VR: AIFF2017 filmmakers Drea Cooper and Zack Canepari will answer questions and discuss the shooting of their VR doc, Policing Flint, and guide viewers through some of their favorite online VR doc experiences.

POLICING FLINT draws a complex portrait of a police department under immense strain. It’s a police force that reflects the city. Flint has been hit by major budget cuts and staffing shortages amid the backdrop of a crippling water crisis, and yet the police force is still expected to keep the citizens safe in one of the most violent cities in America.

Hope and Prey and the Medusa Smack

Renowned Portland artist and experimental filmmaker Vanessa Renwick and musician Tara Jane O’Neil will perform the score of Medusa Smack live followed by Vanessa’s three-screen projection piece, Hope and Prey, which features stunning cinematography of wolves in the wild.

Slanty Eyed Mama LIVE

Don’t miss a LIVE performance after the documentary Happy Lucky Golden Tofu Good Time Fun Fun Show with the group featured in the film. Slanty Eyed Mama is a music and spoken word duo featuring electric violin, samples, and beats by virtuoso slash rocker Lyris Hung and the comedic, political, lyrical words of actor-comedian Kate Rigg.
